Bruce Williams Obituary
Captain Bruce Williams, 74, of Crystal River, Florida, succumbed to cancer at his home surrounded by his family on September 7, 2017.
Bruce was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be forever remembered by his wife of 53 years, Betty Sue, and his children, Barbara (Tony) Powell and Shannon Williams, his grandson Anthony Powell, his father Alec Williams, and his sister Pam (Raymond) Rollison. Bruce was predeceased by his mother, Irene and his brother Danny Williams.
Bruce was born on February 21, 1943 in Homosassa, Florida on the river, where his love of fishing was first inspired by his grandfather, Harley Williams. Bruce enjoyed the outdoors, nature and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
After graduating from Brewster Technical College in Tampa in 1962, Bruce went to work for McDonnell Douglas Corporation at the Kennedy Space Center. He worked at the Cape from 1963 until 1970, during the most important era of America's space program, including the historic moon landing.
Bruce and his family moved back to Crystal River in 1970 and he began his career as a master mechanic / welder with Florida Power Corporation. It was there his co-workers affectionately gave him the nickname 'Mother' for his strict safety standards and concern for their wellbeing.
Bruce fulfilled his dream of becoming a fishing guide when he retired from FPL in 1990, earned his captain's license, and started his own charter business. Over the next twenty years, Captain Bruce shared his native fishing knowledge, experience and legendary hushpuppies with his charter guests. Bruce was a dedicated member of the Homosassa Guides Association where he served six years as Secretary/Treasurer and eight years as President.
Just as his grandfather did for him, Bruce shared his passion for fishing and the outdoors with his own beloved grandson, Anthony. Some of Bruce's proudest moments were going fishing with Anthony and watching him compete in tournaments.
Bruce was kind, caring and was always there for family and friends when they needed help.
A celebration of life service officiated by Pastor Chris Priest will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, September 16 at Red Level Baptist Church, 11025 W. Dunnellon Road, Crystal River, FL 34428. The family will receive friends in visitation at the church from 10 AM until the service. Bruce will be laid to rest at Red Level Cemetery following the church service. Family and friends are invited to lunch at Red Level Baptist Church after the burial.
A special thank you to Strickland Funeral Home for assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to the AES Strikers, a high school fishing club founded in 2015 by his grandson, Anthony.
A Captain Bruce Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund will be created to carry on his legacy and love of fishing. Please send donations to Academy of Environmental Science, c/o Barbara Powell, 1592 SE 2nd Court, Crystal River, FL 34429.
