Charles "Charlie" Gidden Obituary
Charles Welles Shufeldt Gidden, known as Charlie or Coach Gidden, lost his battle to cancer on September 12, 2015, at his home in Lecanto, FL, at the age of 66.
Charlie was born in Bremen, Germany, on September 8, 1949, to father, Culver E. Gidden, (U.S. Consulate) and mother, Matilde Shufeldt. Charlie was the 8th of 9 children in the family. His two aunts, Guillermina and Maria Luisa Shufeldt, also lived with the Gidden's large family to help as his father was stationed at various locations for his job. Charlie completed his high school education in Wakulla, FL, where he lived with his oldest brother, Culver "Red" Gidden. He served in the U.S. Army, 1968-1971, A-Team 222 1st Special Forces Group, and was stationed in Okinawa.
Charlie married Karen Greeson on June 1, 1974, in Tallahassee, FL. After living in Tallahassee, Charlie and Karen moved to the Jacksonville area, where Gregory, their first child was born. The family then moved to California where daughters Reyna and Amber were born. After returning to FL in 1986, the family moved to Citrus County where the fourth child, Tyler, was born.
Charlie was a very active member in the community, including the Lecanto school system. He was Lecanto Primary PTO President for several years, as well as an active member on the School Advisory Enhancement Council. He was a strong advocate for the youth, and continually coached both on and off the field. Charlie took great pride in caring for his children, often bragging about being "Mr. Mom," and coached all four children in soccer. He was an E-Certified Licensed Coach and Board Member of West Citrus Soccer Club, prior to it becoming Citrus United.
Charlie was a loving father and husband who will be missed dearly. He lived his life by the motto "Every day is a holiday!" He lived his life serving others, whether he knew them or not. He never let an opportunity to serve others pass him by.
Charlie leaves behind his wife of 41 years, Karen; two sons, Gregory (Denver, CO) and Tyler (Tampa, FL); two daughters, Reyna (Tim) Wainwright (Savannah, GA) and Amber (Ryan) Thomas (Inverness, FL); three grandchildren, Bryce Thomas, Zach and Sofia Wainwright. Charlie is also survived by three sisters, Lorna Gidden (CA), Linda Haque (CA) and Patricia Cooper (CO); and two brothers, Robert (NV) and Michael (NE). He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Culver ("Red") Gidden and David Gidden; and one sister, Dale Fernandez.
A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 3474 W. Southern Street, Lecanto, FL. Charlie will be buried at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. Memorial contributions may be made to HPH-Hospice of Citrus County, 2939 W. Gulf to Lake Hwy, Lecanto, FL, 34461 for Charles Gidden. Cremation performed by Brown Funeral Home and Crematory.
