David Vern Abbey Obituary
Abbey, David Vern, 83, died May 22, 2017 at home under the care of hospice and his loving wife, Juanita. David was born May 16, 1934 in Lansing, Michigan where he resided until 1964 and then moved a few miles North to a home on Lake Geneva in DeWitt, Michigan before retiring in 1997 and moving to Sugarmill Woods in Homosassa, FL.
He graduated from Sexton High School in 1952, having traveled internationally with their marching band and Michigan State University in 1956 with a Business Degree in Production Management. At MSU he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U. S. Army and then served on active duty for 2 years as Chief of the Scheduling Branch, Operations and Training Office, U.S. Army Ordnance School, at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. One day after leaving the service and returning to Lansing he was introduced to Juanita Anderson on the day before Thanksgiving, 1958 who was going to prepare a turkey dinner for her housemates the next day. Two years later they were married on February 16, 1961 which flourished for over 56 years and resulted in 3 children, Jennifer (Brian) Agler of Holt, MI, Jason Abbey of Lansing, MI, and Edwin Abbey of Tallahassee, FL and grandchildren Aubree Agler, Briana (Jacob) Decambra, Carrie Abbey, Alicia Agler, Nathan and Grason Abbey. Also surviving in addition to Juanita are a brother Charles (Annette) Abbey of Ludowici, GA and many nieces and nephews.
In 1959, Mr. Abbey joined the Family business, Abbey Distributing Co. in Lansing with his Mother and Father and in 1973 upon his parents retirement became President of Abbey Heating and Cooling Service for the next 24 years.
In retirement, Dave enjoyed many friends in golfing, dining club, pinochle club, bridge club and the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association being the President in 2004 and serving as Tournament Director for many years creating over 50 themed tennis tournaments for its members and guests.
Mr. Abbey's cremains will be interred at Fountains Memorial Park, 5635 W. Green Acres Street, Homosassa, with a memorial service to be announced. Arrangements are under the direction of Strickland Funeral Home and Crematory, Crystal River, Florida.
