Elizabeth Grace "Betty" Kelly Obituary
Elizabeth Grace "Betty" Kelly, was born in Glenside, PA to L.Bruce and Elizabeth Thackera Hilsee on May 11, 1929. She came to this area from Pittsburgh, PA, first as a winter resident and then permanently in 2002. She graduated from the University of Maryland in 1952, earning a Bachelor's degree in fine arts. Betty was a homemaker, a loving mother, a supportive wife, and was known to many as "Nana" in her later years. Betty traced her ancestry to pre-Revolutionary War days. One ancestor served as a wheelright in artillery with a direct commission from George Washington. Her maternal great-
grandfather served as a bodyguard for Abraham Lincoln during the early days of the War Between the States before the Pinkertons took over the duties from the Army. He later fought in the Battle of Gettysburg and was ultimately taken prisoner and held at Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. He contracted beriberi from malnutrition and lost his eyesight as a result. Following a prisoner exchange, his wife, Amanda, drove a buckboard from Philadelphia to Richmond to bring him home.
Betty was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Moshannon Chapter, Phillipsburg, PA, the Crystal River (FL) United Methodist Church and Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Surviving are her husband and best friend of 66 years, David J. Kelly; two sons, James A. Kelly and his wife, Azure, of Homosassa; David B. Kelly and his wife, Vonda, of Richmond, VA; and daughter, Amanda K. Heffenden, and her husband, Edward of Summerville, SC; and five grandchildren: Adrienne Elizabeth and Kaitlyn Grace Kelly of Homosassa; Liam Malachy Haffenden and Dayna Siobhan Haffenden of Summerville, SC; Petra Quinn Kelly of Richmond, VA. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday April 20th from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Crystal River. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 AM Thursday April 21st at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Florida National cemetery, Bushnell. For those who wish, please consider a memorial donation to Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast. Arrangements are under the care of Strickland Funeral Home, Crystal River.
