Elizabeth Louise "Betty" Stokes Obituary
Elizabeth "Betty" Louise Stokes, age 83, of Inverness, Florida, died Monday, November 9, 2015, in Inverness, FL.
She was born July 16, 1932 in Hinsdale, IL, daughter of Arthur and Ethel (Schmidt) Boyer. She received her high school diploma from Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, IL, in 1950 and her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Michigan State College in 1954. Betty married Robert "Bob" Stanley Stokes on September 5, 1954, and moved to Yokohama, Japan, where Bob was stationed in the Army. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before Bob passed away on September 24, 2014.
They lived in many homes over the years in Michigan, Tennessee, California, Ohio, Indiana and Texas, and moved to Inverness from Clearwater in 1998. Her summers centered around their cottages, Wynken, Blynken and Nod on Portage Lake, in Onekama, Michigan. She only missed two summers of her life when she wasn't able to get there at all.
Betty was a homemaker, but also did some substitute teaching and worked for 7 years for Jewish Family Services in Clearwater. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Inverness and attended the First Congregational Church of Onekama, Michigan. She was also a member of Sigma Lambda, a chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, and a member of the Inverness Woman's Club.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, William A. Boyer. Survivors include daughter, Linda (Rod) Ray of Lafayette, IN; son, James "Jim" (Tracey) Stokes of Kalamazoo, MI; 4 grandchildren, Anthony (Kathryn) Ray of Greenfield, IN, Michelle (Chris) Librie of Kaneohe, HI, Jessica (Michael) Stokes of Kalamazoo, MI, and Matthew Stokes of Kalamazoo, MI; 2 great-grandchildren, Caleb Librie and Carson Ray. A Service of Remembrance will be held in Onekama, Michigan next summer.
