A native of Bell, Fla., he was born Aug. 8, 1934, to Arthur and Thelma (Hodge) Fletcher, one of four children. Mr. Fletcher was a retired electrician, most recently with the Florida Power Crystal River Nuclear Plant. He began his career as an electrician with Carlos Hope Electrical Contractor in northern Florida, and at one time also owned and operated a trucking company in Perry, Fla. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. Local No. 1205, Gainesville, and was also a Mason. Gene was a kind and genuine man of strong character and integrity. He was a man of his word and "his word was his bond."
He moved to Citrus County in 1980, from Perry, and was well liked and respected in the county. Mr. Fletcher was a determined, strong-willed man with a great sense of humor. Gene loved to eat and was proud of being a "meat and potatoes man" who was also fond of our local shrimp.
He is survived by his loving companion of 20 years, Claudia B. Giemsch, Homosassa, Fla.; mother, Thelma H. Fletcher, Gainesville, Fla.; a sister, Judi Furman, also of Gainesville; and nieces and nephews Holly, Chris, Arthur, Louis, Michael, Jennifer, Katie and Thomas. Gene was preceded in death by two spouses, Mattie and Marilyn; father, Arthur W. Fletcher (2004); a brother, Arthur F. Fletcher; a sister, Inarae Young; and a niece, Becky Culala.
