Herman A. Sinemus Obituary
Herman A. Sinemus, age 91, of Floral City, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2016.
Herman was born on December 31, 1924, around 1:30 p.m. during a snow storm in Derry Township, Westmoreland County, PA, to the late Herman C. (1977) and Mary R. (Gamble) Sinemus (2000). Dr. Watkins had difficulty getting his Model T started so Herman's father used his own Model T to retrieve the doctor so he could bring Herman safely into the world. He graduated from Derry Township High School in 1942 at 17 years of age. Herman gained employment as a painter of some of the Carnegie-Illinois steel mills in the Pittsburgh area until he joined the United States Marine Corps in September, 1943. He proudly served his country and was a Veteran of World War II. Herman was awarded three battle stars for action against the enemy at Okinawa, Borneo and Tokyo. After his military service, he returned to Pennsylvania.
He wanted to be a civil engineer and attended the Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, IN. He graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor's of Civil Engineering Degree that he obtained in 30 consecutive months, all while working at least 20 hours per week. Herman's professional career was in Traffic Engineering and he served three cities in 30 years: Fort Wayne, IN, Phoenix, AZ, and Berkeley, CA. He was a Lifetime Fellow Member in the Institute of Traffic Engineering, a Registered Professional Engineer in Indiana for over 50 years and a Registered Traffic Engineer in California.
Herman met his first wife Virginia "Jeannie" Wessel in East McKeesport, PA, before they had both joined the Marines. They were married for five years. Herman then met May Eleanor Bracht at a YWCA mixer in Fort Wayne, IN. On May 7, 1949, he married May, the love of his life, and they shared 63 wonderful years of marriage until her passing on March 31, 2013. They moved to Florida in 1985 from Berkeley, CA, to spend their retirement together in Floral City. A Christian by faith, he was a very active and willing participating member of the Floral City United Methodist Church.
Herman was a kind man who always went out of his way to help others and those in need. He also enjoyed working on cars and photography in his spare time.
Left to mourn his passing and cherish his precious memory are his daughter, Nancy (David) Fleming of Reisterstown, MD, two sons: Andrew Sinemus of Edison, NJ, and his ex Leslie Sinemus of Milburn, NJ, Mark Sinemus of Floral City, FL; grandchildren: Stephanie J. (Erik) Hrin of Alexandria, VA, Laura Rebecca (Adam) Barron of Leesburg, VA, Zachery Sinemus of Brooklyn, NY, and Samuel Sinemus of Milburn, NJ. His two great-grandchildren: Amelia and Marley Barron of Leesburg, VA. Herman has nine surviving siblings: Anna Mae Yordy of Albuquerque, NM, Mary Edna Neighly of Frederick, MD, Frances Olson of New Alexandria, PA, Lewis Sinemus of Ligonier, PA, Rose Planinsek of Ligonier, PA, Vic (Cass) of Derry, Pa, Lon (Judy) of Derry, PA, Linda (Larry) Deal of Torrance, PA, and Ronald (Linda) of Latrobe, PA.
