Iva Ellen Puckett Obituary
Iva Ellen Puckett, age 85 years , of Inverness, passed away on May 10, 2016 at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. Iva was born March 30, 1931 in New Kensington, Pa to William S. Reese, Sr. and Helen Fink Reese. Iva and her family moved to Florida in 1946. She was a graduate of Citrus High School. She was a brave and determined woman, and in 1952 she boarded a Greyhound bus in central Florida and rode across country to Travis AFB, north of San Francisco, to marry Gene M. Puckett, whom she had met while attending Citrus High School. She was a devoted Air Force wife and traveled to bases around the country and to Japan with Gene and their three children. After his retirement in 1972, they returned to Floral City to live. Mrs. Puckett was a lifetime member of the Floral City United Methodist Church. She was a 50+ year member and Past Matron of the Floral City Order of the Eastern Star (OES) #164 and Past Mother Advisor of the Rainbow Girls. Iva was an Auxiliary member of the American League Post #225. She was also an original member of a Bunco group who have met and played together monthly for over 25 years. Iva loved to volunteer her time wherever she was stationed, usually with Girl or Boy Scouts. She received training in the early 1960s as a Red Cross Nurse's Aide and she continued that service off and on throughout her life. In 1996 she joined the Citrus Memorial Hospital Volunteers and remained active for 20 years, providing 25,000 hours of service to the hospital. She served as president of the Volunteers, was Volunteer of the Year in 2000 and recently was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her service. In 2004 when Citrus County was impacted by two hurricanes, she chose to be at the hospital 24/7 for the duration, manning the front desk, serving as the hub of information for staff and community. Iva was preceded in death by her husband Gene M. Puckett, who passed away in 1995, her parents and numerous sisters and brothers in law. She is survived by her brother William S. Reese, Jr., of Sylvester, GA; her daughters Virginia Simmons of Inverness, Patricia Geer (Dr. Joseph) of Seneca, SC and son Mike Puckett (Lynn) of Tampa. Her grandchildren are Lindy Davis (Shane) of Brandon, Ellen Geer of Charlotte, NC, Sallie Roberts (Clay) of Charlotte, NC, Joseph Geer, Jr., of Godfrey, IL, William Geer of Seneca, SC, Reese Puckett of Tampa, Andrew Puckett of Tampa and great grandson Sebastian Davis of Brandon. Her family also included numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly and devoted friend and caregiver Ellen George of Inverness. Friends may call from 3-6:00 PM Saturday, May 14th at the Inverness Chapel of Hooper Funeral Homes. A Celebration of Iva's life will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, May 15th at the Floral City Methodist Church, followed by a graveside service at the Hills of Rest Cemetery, Floral City, FL.
