James M. "Jim" Bierly Obituary
James M. Bierly (Jim) 82, of Homosassa, passed away on Wednesday, April 5 after a long illness.
Jim was past president of the Citrus Audubon Society. He founded the Citrus County Native Plant Society along with four of his friends and his wife Teddi in 2001 and remained president until 2011.
Jim gave many talks about wildlife and native plants to various garden clubs and wildlife associations, but his main concern was with the safety and well-being of his beloved gopher tortoises.
During the late building boom, Sugar Mill Woods in Homosassa endured much construction which endangered the burrows of the gopher tortoises. Jim was called to capture and relocate hundreds of these docile animals.
Jim was predeceased by his his wife Teddi Bierly, his parents, Rose and Harry Bierly of St. Petersburg, his sisters, Elizabeth Cooper, and Harriet Orr, and his son-in-law David Bell.
Jim is survived by his son Scott M. Bierly of Pittsburg, his daughter Kristin M. Bierly Bell, his grandchildren Fiona and Liam Bell all of St. Petersburg, and his long-time love and companion Pam Ricker of Dunnellon, FL.
Jim was a 1952 graduate of St. Petersburg High School. He served two separate terms in the US Army as a medical tech. He graduated from St. Pete Jr. College, St. Anthony's School of Medical Technology, and the University of South Florida.
Funeral arrangements are with the Wilder Funeral Home in Homosassa on Friday, April 14 at 12:00 PM. Internment is at the Bushnell National Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to H.O.P.E. Wildlife Rehabilitation, www.hopewildlife.org.
