John "Sonny" Almeida, 81, of Floral City, died on February 26, 2011, at Citrus Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 28, 1929, in Taunton, MA, to the late John S. and Mary (Baptista) Almeida. He retired from Bay State Gas Co. in 1982 after 37 years of service. Mr. Almeida moved to Floral City, FL, in 1990 from Taunton, MA. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Taunton Lodge of Elks No. 150, Portuguese American Civic Club, American Legion Post No. 155 of Crystal River, NRA, AARP and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.
Mr. Almeida is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, April 22, 1999; and his father, mother and sister, Jenny. He is survived by daughter, Sherri Lynne Almeida of Houston, TX; sister, Irene Amaral of Taunton, MA; nephew, Marty James Amaral and wife Chris; stepsons, Kelly Conaty and wife Patricia of Birmingham, AL, and Jay T. Conaty and wife Beth of New Bedford, MA; and grandchildren, Kara, Colin, Anastasia, Snidana, Alana and Olivia Conaty of Birmingham, AL, Sarah Conaty of Key West, FL, and Katie, Jay T. and Tyler Conaty of New Bedford, MA.
Mr. Almeida will be buried at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA, at a later date. Wilder Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements. Condolences may be offered at
