John Alviggi Jr., 82, of Homosassa, Fla., passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness. A native of West Orange, N.J., he was born June 2, 1931, to John Sr. and Veronica (Kent) Alviggi, one of two children. John retired to Homosassa in 1986 from West Orange, N.J., and was a retired vice president of First Fidelity Bank in New Jersey, now known as Wells Fargo Bank. He was also a former brokerage manager in the insurance industry. As an avid and talented basketball player, Mr. Alviggi was a member of the West Orange High School state championship team of 1949 and attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., under a basketball scholarship, earning a bachelor's degree in business. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a first lieutenant, also playing basketball for the Army. He loved fishing, hunting and playing golf and was past club champion of both the Fairmount C.C., Chatham, N.J., and Sugarmill Woods C.C., Homosassa.
John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances E. "Fran" Alviggi, Homosassa; daughter, Lynn E. Heinz (husband George), Venice; daughter, Janet Urso (husband Joseph), West Orange, N.J.; son, John L. Alviggi (wife Paula), Chalfont, Pa.; brother, James Alviggi (wife Barbara), West Orange, N.J.; and grandchildren, Keith, Gregory and Kelly Heinz, Jessica and Joseph Urso and Jack Alviggi.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at Wilder Funeral Home, Homosassa, where a celebration of John's life will be held at 6 p.m. Interment will take place, 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2014, at Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota.
