Joseph A. Silvestro, 87, Inverness, died March 26, 2013, under the loving care of Hospice of Citrus County surrounded by his family. A native of Staten Island, he was born May 16, 1925, the youngest of eight children, to the late Charles and Carmella (Mastandrea) Silvestro and moved to Inverness in 1972. He operated Silvestro's Deli on Staten Island for many years in addition to being a professional drummer, having appeared on the Johnny Carson Show. He also served our country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After moving to Inverness, he opened the original Joe's Deli on Dampier Street. Following retirement, his son-in-law, Joe Fallon, took over the business and relocated it to the Inverness Shopping Plaza. Joe loved the game of baseball and was a renowned umpire in little league circles all over the country, having umpired the Little League World Series during his career. Always interested in our community's youth, he was one of the original organizers of the Inverness Little League program. For this commitment, he was honored by the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce, the Sertoma Club, and other service organizations over the years.
