Peter Aloysius Costello Jr., 86, of Lecanto, Fla., formerly of Staten Island, N.Y., passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012.

Peter was born Jan. 27, 1926, in Staten Island, N.Y., to Peter A. Costello Sr. and Ruth Gotthardt Costello.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia; four children, Paul M. of Staten Island, N.Y., Kathleen M. Daniel (Karl) of Lecanto, Fla., Col. Peter A. Costello III (retired USAF) (Katarina) of Chesterfield, Va., and Kevin T. Costello (Maebelle) of Staten Island, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, Amy Fabretti (Steven), Peter Hogan, Michael Costello, Peter A. Costello IV, Kaitlin Costello, Daniel Costello, Paul Costello, Asa Costello, Kiera Costello and Alexandra Costello; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Rizzo, Steven Fabretti and Emily Fabretti; and one sister, Rita Heffernan of North Carolina. Peter was preceded in death by his brother, Father Bernard Costello.
Peter retired from the New York City Police Department after 28 years of service. He worked in the 1st Precinct in Manhattan and the 66th Precinct in Brooklyn. After retiring in 1978, he moved to Inverness and was a school bus driver for Citrus County and a member of the Highlands Volunteer Fire Department.
Peter was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from June 1943 to May 1946. He received the following service medals: American Defense, Asiatic Pacific, Presidential Unit Citation, W.W. II Victory Medal, Marine Occupation Japan and Marine Good Conduct.
He was a member of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association of the New York City Police Department and the Senior Points Quota Golf League. Peter was also an avid New York Giants football fan and coached in the Pop Warner football league for 18 years on Staten Island, N.Y.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at the Brown Funeral Home in Lecanto. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the Brown Funeral Home. Full military honors and burial will follow at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.
