Richard D. Yelvington Sr. graduated Georgia Tech, Atlanta Georgia Tech Val Victorian 1952 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a decorated veteran serving two years in the Philippines and Japan, 1945 and 1946 in the U.S. Army rising in rank to Sergeant. He went on to become one of the partners in the J.W. Austin Engineering Co. The company merged with the Heery and Heery Group in the late 1960s and Richard Sr. became the managing director of engineering.
His award winning designs included the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida and the Lockheed Skunkworks in California.
He was voted president of the National Professional Engineering Society in 1994 and served as president for 4 years.
He was also an inventor who worked with the Trane and Carrier Corporation to design almost all the large water cooled air condition systems for large buildings used today. Among many of his inventions, he was the key inventor of the AC Heat Pump.
He was a born again Christian and a Deacon at Oak Grove Methodist Church in Atlanta.
In the mid 1980's he became the initial founder of the largest street homeless center in Atlanta.
He sat on the board of directors of many charities and was the president of the Sugar Mill Woods Civic Association, Homosassa, Florida at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Decky Yelvington, and his two sons Steve Yelvington, 67 and Richard Yelvington, Jr., 62. His grandchildren, Celeste Yelvington and Daniel Yelvington and two great-grandchildren, Shane and Liam.
Private cremation will take place under the direction of Brown Funeral Home and Crematory in Lecanto, FL.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will take place at Yelvington Design, 6950 Bryan Dairy Road, Seminole, Florida 33777 on October 10th at noon; casual attire, refreshments will be served.
