Walter Thomas Marks, 89, passed away on September 21, 2016 at his home in Lecanto, Florida. He was born on September 16, 1927 in East Martinsburg, New York to Walter and Mary Gorski Marks. Walter graduated from General Martin School in Glenfield, NY in 1943. After high school he briefly attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1944 where he became a medic serving both the Marines and Navy as a Corpsman. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Cornell University and received his Bachelors of Science in Agriculture in 1950. He was called to duty again in 1951 for a brief enlistment during the Korean War.
Walter had many careers over the course of his life, including dairyman, heavy equipment owner and
operator, lumberjack, educator and cattleman. He retired in 1991 after teaching agriculture and industrial arts over 28 years at Hernando High School, Parrott Middle School and Central High School in Hernando County, Florida. In retirement, he managed multiple herds of beef cattle in Sumter and Citrus counties in Florida.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary Marks, his brothers Hillary, Herbert, Eugene and Reginald Marks, niece Mary and nephew Herbie. Walter is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carol, his children Carie (Scott) Summers of Sharpsburg, Georgia and Wyatt (Julie) Marks of Clermont, Florida; his grandsons Braydon, Liam and Gavin Marks; and his nieces and nephews Minette, Cheri, Jackie, Billy, Traci, Annie, Reggie Jr., Scott, Laura, Mitch, Beth and Debbie.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Marks' residence at 10060 South Lecanto Highway, Lecanto, Florida at 3:30 p.m. on October 1, 2016. A more formal service will follow at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Future Farmers of America ( in his honor. Arrangements are being handled by Merritt Funeral Home in Brooksville, Florida.
