George Edwin "Ed" Akin Obituary
George Edwin (Ed) Akin, of Crystal River, passed away at home, August 11, 2014, under the care of Hospice and his family. He was born in Van Dyke, Michigan, July 3, 1933, the son of George and Willie Ray Akin. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a Staff Sergeant for 4 years.
In his early years, Ed worked for Chrysler Proving Grounds, in Chelsea, Michigan, for 15 years and Dana Corporation, in Olive Branch, Mississippi for 30 years. He was President of the Michigan Jaycees for several years. After retiring, they moved to Punta Gorda, Florida, then to Faith, North Carolina, to be near his sister, Linda and eventually settling in Crystal River for the past 8 years.
Survivors include his loving wife, Jean Akin of 61 years of Crystal River; daughters, Debbie Monda and her husband Damian of Seattle, Washington, Diane Patterson of Crystal River; his sister, Linda Shive and her husband Mike of Faith, North Carolina; brother, John Akin and his wife Sue of Michigan; five great-grandchildren, Jennifer Mendoza and husband David, Greg Patterson and wife Trisha all of Louisiana, Tim, Mallory, and Alison Monday of Washington; three great-grandchildren, Kyle, Madison and Kali. He was loved by all his friends and family and will be dearly missed by all including his little dog "Molly".
The family would like to thank Joe Barry and Frank Mahler, Ed's friends, who have been so supportive of him during these last several years. He loved them both dearly.
A Memorial Service will be held at The Strickland Funeral Home, Crystal River, this Thursday, August 14, with a fellowship gathering at 12 p.m. and the memorial service stating at 1p.m. A private luncheon for immediate family and friends will follow after the service at Ed and Jean's home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family, who in turn donate all monies to the Hospice House or donations can be sent directly to Hospice of Citrus County in Ed's name (George Edwin Akin).
