David "Zip" D. Stephenson, 70, of Homosassa, passed away April 28, 2014; Jimmy Fischer was there every day with Zip until the end.
He was born on Feb. 21, 1944, to Donald and Edith Hanshew in Charleston, West Virginia. David was a veteran with the United States Air Force and an occupational therapist for most of his life. He was a member of the VFW Post 8189 in Homosassa, where he was past president of the men's auxiliary, founding member of the AmVets Post 89 and a former member of the Eagles FOE 4147 and the Moose Lodge.
He loved playing golf, playing dominos, all sports - most especially the Tampa Bay Bucs - loved arts and crafts and was an amazing poet. David moved to the area 13 years ago from St. Petersburg and was a member of the Zion Methodist Church in Virginia. He never met anyone who wasn't a friend.
David was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife Germaine Stephenson; children Tracie Harrison and Charles David (Sarah) Stephenson; stepdaughter Kristin (Ritchie) Shepherd; sister Donna (Butch) Schrader; grandchildren Koree, Dustin aka DJ and Mackenzie; step-grandchildren RJ and Ayden; great-grandchild on the way Pandora; nieces Becky, Lori and Candance; all his beloved family in Virginia; his friends that loved him in St. Pete; his most beloved friends at the VFW; and his beloved pets Shyanne and Dakota.
Private cremation will take place under the direction of Brown Funeral Home & Crematory in Lecanto. Graveside service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2014 at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2014, at the VFW Post 8189, 8856 W. Veterans Drive, Homosassa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VFW Men's Auxiliary Post 8189. Please contact Roger Ingall Jr. (treasurer) or Jerry Webb (president).
