Ferdinand ACH Obituary

ACH

Dr. Ferdinand Jay Ach, a Cincinnati family physician for 50 years known as much for his sense of humor as his passion for patient care, died on Jan. 7 after a long illness. He was 91. Dr. Ach felt strongly about the primary role that family practice physicians should play in the delivery of medical care. To that end, Dr. Ach served a term as the president of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians, and was a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians Committee on Aging. He also was instrumental the founding of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Throughout his lengthy career, Dr. Ach provided medical care to anyone who needed it, no matter what the circumstances, without regard to ability to pay. He showed concern and compassion for all and was committed to creating meaningful and caring doctor-patient relationships. He was also known for his great sense of humor. Dr. Ach was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1921 to Eugene and Ruth Ilfeld Ach, who moved to Cincinnati during his childhood. He graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1939, and earned a degree in chemistry from Harvard in 1943. Dr. Ach married in 1949 and received his M.D. degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1950. He leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years, Joanna; two sons, Jay and Rob; daughter-in-law, Karen; a sister, Gene; and a brother, Tony. A celebration of Dr. Ach's life will be held at "DiStasi at 400" in Wyoming on February 16 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians Foundation or the Hamilton County Friends of the Public Library in Dr. F. Jay Ach's name

Not sure what to say?

Dr. Arch worked with my mom at the Katherine Booth Home. My mom liked him so much she became a patient of his. He delivered me in 1964 and was my doctor and friend until he retired. My 3 children were also patients of his. I still go to the practice that he started. There will never be a nother person like you my dear Dr. Ach. You were very loved and will be missed.

I lived with Dr. Ach's family when I came to the United States in 1938 when I was 11 years old. I came from Germany and lived with he and his family. I am saddened to hear of Jay's death. It sounds like he was a very special person and doctor. What a difference he made in this world! My condolences to his wife and family. With warm wishes, Ellen Kasper Kisslinger

I just learned of Jay's passing. Needless to say, I all but cried after talking to his wife, two boys and daughter-in-law. I knew his wife, Jo, well; I had only met Jay once but was bowled over with his wonderful outlook and humor. I feel very embarrassed that I didn't realize he had died over 1 month ago. Jay, you will be sorely missed and Jo, I've said it to you before - please call if you need anything. I think by now you know how much I adore you. Dave Hakes

Dr. Ach literally saved my life when I was just 6 years old. He had just started into practice with Dr. Ralph Cunningham, in Reading. I needed surgery that, at that time, had never been performed in Cincinnati. When other doctors were not sure what to do, Dr. Ach contacted several out of town colleagues and after consultation I had the surgery - and I'm still here nearly 60 yrs later! That was in the 1950's and he remained our family physician until his retirement. For several years, while my Grandmother was still alive, he tended to 4 generations of our family. When my Father passed away in December of '03, Dr. Ach attended Dad's visitation on crutches from having knee surgery. He was a remarkable man, extremely intelligent, insightful, and way ahead of his time. Over the years he did so much for us, from house calls to taking phone calls in the middle of the night. I am also grateful to him for introducing our family to Dr. Christopher Sweeney who is carrying on Dr. Ach's fine tradition of amazing medicine. We owe so much gratitude to Dr. Ach and will never forget his kindness, understanding, wit, and his strict and straightforward manner of giving orders - from his heart.

Dr Ach was our family doctor for about 20 years. I'll never forget when my daughter was broadsided by another car at Galbraith and Vine St. The noise of the crash brought Dr Ach running out of his office to tend our daughter. His office at that time was on the west side of Vine St just north of Galbraith. What a great man. We loved him.

Joanna Ach-Jay had a wonderful fulfilling life. I am so glad my family(Kevin and Kristin) had the chance to know him. It was so kind that day when Jay helped Kevin with the badly skinned arm wound. That told me alot about Jay. I know he loved helping people and provided a great service to the community. Continued Blessings to you--Joan (Gentry)Wooten. Please let us know if you need anything.

Great Dr. I wish more doctors had his bedside manners. He touched so many lives and sure to be missed by many

When I lived in Wyoming Dr. Ach was not only my doctor for many years but also my neighbor. He is the only doctor that I have called in the middle of the night due to pain (from gall stones) and he is the only doctor who has made a house call in the middle of the night to administer pain meds in my hour of need. He was a wonderful caregiver and a true friend to our family.

Dr Ach was my grandmother's physician (Ella Henderson)and on her 100th birthday he and his nurse at the time, Carol Adams came to the nursing home for her birthday. I will always remember this. This was in the early 80's

I started going to Dr Ach as a young woman in my 20's. I stayed with him until he retired---now in my 60's, I am still going to the practice he started.
He was caring and kind--once he visited my young son and me at home after office hours, because we had a raging flu and he was worried about us. Those kindnesses are never forgotten. Thanks for taking care of us, Dr Ach.

I had the privelege of being one of Dr. Ach's patients for many years beginning in the 70's. What a wonderful clinician - approached medicine with tremendous common sense, and provided humor as a bonus! A wonderful man all the way around. May he rest in peace.

This saddens my husband and myself. Along with treating you he always made you laugh...guess laughter is the best medicine. He was the best, and a wonderful example of what every physician should strive to be. We just can't say enough wonderful things about him as a man and physician. RIP Dr. Ach and keep them smiling.
