Norman BARRY Obituary

BARRY

Dr. Barry died peacefully at Hospice on the evening of June 13th. He had suffered mightily for many years prior to his death. He is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn and three siblings, Richard Barry of Charlotte North Carolina, John Barry of Newport Richey Florida and Regina Rosenberger of Tampa, Florida. He was beloved by his many nieces and nephews and they brought much joy to his life. Dr. Barry was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from St. Sebastian's Country Day School and then went on to Boston College where he received his degree in biology. In 1962 he joined the U.S. Air force as an officer during the conflict in Vietnam. It was while he was stationed in Germany that he met the love of his life, JoAnn. They shared forty-six years together. When he was discharged he went back to BC to take courses which would allow him to be admitted to a doctoral program which would prepare him to be a clinical psychologist. Norm and JoAnn traveled quite a road during these academic years, culminating with an internship in Annapolis, Maryland. Dr. Norman Barry received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Toledo in 1972. He was a professor and clinical psychologist in the Department of Psychology at Xavier University for 35 years, from 1972-2007. Dr. Barry served as the Chair of the Department of Psychology from 1977-1983. He was a master teacher, mentor, clinical supervisor, and leader in academic and professional circles. As part of a joint appointment with Longview State Hospital, now Summit Behavioral Health, he was a senior staff psychologist from 1972-1975. During this time, he was the Director of the Training in Independent Living Program (TIL), which was part of the national mental health movement to decentralize the care of individuals with chronic mental illnesses from the state hospitals into the community. Dr. Barry was a tremendous advocate for his students and clients and through his clinical practice impacted the lives of hundreds of students, faculty, and staff, as well as members of the Greater Cincinnati community. He also held various leadership roles at the University, within professional organizations, and through consultation with various mental health agencies in the community. He was a Board member of the Mental Health Association from 1982-84 and the Cincinnati Restoration Incorporated from 1980-84. Dr. Barry gave generously of himself over his career at Xavier. As a colleague and friend to the University, he will be deeply missed. He leaves behind a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren, and many friends to mourn his passing. Visitation will be held at The Gwen Mooney Funeral Home at Spring Grove Cemetery Friday, June 20, 5:30-8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 21, at 10:00AM at Bellarmine Chapel at Xavier University. A reception will be held afterward at the Clock Tower Lounge, Gallagher Center from 11:00-1: 30 p.m. Interment at Swan River Cemetery in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Not sure what to say?

I just learned today of Norm's passing. Norm and I were psychology interns 1970 to 1971. I learned a lot from him and enjoyed his company. He seemed to always smile, and we enjoyed many good times and learning experiences together. My condolences to JoAnn. I am very sorry he is no longer with us. May he rest in peace.

Norm was my friend during grammar and high school and at Boston College. He was always a most caring and sensitive person. Obviously he led a loving and full life with rich accomplishments. At his 50th reunion from St. Sebastians he said at the end "I can't wait for the 60th."

Norm you didn't make that but you will always be close to my heart as we had a common goal - to serve our fellow humans in whatever way possible.

JoAnn, I am very sorry for your loss. Vin McCarthy

Norman was my classmate up to seventh grade in Our Lady Presentation Grammar School. I always remember him as polite and gentlemanly even way back then. I am so sorry for your loss, JoAnn. Lorraine D. Bath Leach, Lakeland, FL

Uncle Norman was a man who always had a great sense of humor, and a smile on his face.

I'll always remember his kindness, his intelligence, his friendliness, and how personable he was.
