ALLEN
Samuel Marston was born on August 24, 1929 in Glendale and died December 5, 2013. He was the great, great grandson of one of original founders of the Village. Sam was raised in Glendale, and after graduating from Harvard in 1952, he served in the Korean Conflict in Japan. Then he returned to Cincinnati and married Louise De Bus Knauft. Following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps, he became a lawyer after graduating from UC Law School in 1957. He began his career with Strauss and Troy in Cincinnati, was made partner, and served as Chairman of the Board of the firm for a time, all of this along side a full time practice in corporate and labor law. He served as Chancellor of the Diocese of Southern Ohio for the Episcopal Church for almost 30 years, and was very active all his life in Christ Church Glendale and on the Glendale Planning Commission. He and Louise raised their four children in Glendale. After retiring, he and Louise took up painting, and they travelled for extended periods to Southern France, Italy, England and Ireland to paint. Throughout Sam's life, the Allen family spent summers on Pewabic Island, the family island in Lake Muskoka, Ontario. Some of Sam's favorite memories were from there: fishing trips with his brother Louis, canoeing and picnicking with his children and grandchildren, and boating. For the past 30 years Sam and Louise have spent time on Sanibel Island every winter, where they treasured having family and friends with them and enjoyed lots of art classes together. Sam painted actively up until the time of his death and his work has been exhibited in a number of art shows. This past August, Sam and Louise spent two weeks on the Baltic with grandchildren, Sam and Marcie Allen, who took tender care of their grandfather. An avid outdoorsman, Sam rowed at Harvard; he played tennis and enjoyed gardening. A true Renaissance man, Sam lived a rich life. He is survived by his wife, Louise, of 57 years, his daughter, Marcie of S. Kortright, New York, his son, Rob and his wife, Cyndi, of Stevensville, Michigan, his daughter Libby and her husband Tom Gibbons of New York City, and his son, Andrew of Cincinnati, plus 6 grandchildren: Mandy, Sam and Marcie Allen, and Sarah, Abby and Grace Gibbons. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday December 14th at Christ Church Glendale at 11:00 AM with a reception to follow at Glendale Lycueum. The Family requests that donations in lieu of flowers be made to Valley Interfaith Food and Clothing Center 420 W Wyoming Ave, Cincinnati, OH 4521, Greater Cincinnati Foundation 200 West 4th Street Cincinnati, OH 45202 or Hospice of Cincinnati PO Box 633597 Cincinnati, Ohio 45263. I was saddened to hear of Sam Allen's passing this week. Sam will always be remembered as a great man that generously gave of himself to the Glendale community. His many years served as Chairman of the Planning Commission forged the map that guided Glendale to its envied standing in the Greater Cincinnati community. Thank you for being a cherished mentor and God bless you and your beloved family. Walter Cordes, Glendale Village Administrator (Retired).
