Carolyn MCCLINTOCK Obituary

McClintock

Carolyn Holder, 76, died peacefully at home in Cincinnati Thursday, May 16, 2013. Beloved wife, mother, journalist, teacher, and friend, Carolyn's love and light will be sorely missed. A native of Monticello, Indiana, Carolyn grew up working in the family pharmacy at 115 North Main Street. It began as White's Pharmacy in 1943, then became Holder Pharmacy from 1950 to 1971, after her father, civic leader and Indiana Board of Pharmacy member Ivan W. Holder, became full owner. Carolyn served customers from the time she was tall enough to reach the lever on the soda fountain. A talented journalist, Carolyn started a weekly school news column in eighth grade, for the Monticello Herald Journal, and went on to become an Ernie Pyle scholar at Indiana University, where she edited the Indiana Daily Student, earned her Masters in English, pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma, was inducted to Theta Sigma Phi, and was tapped by the Mortar Board as an outstanding woman. She went on to teach English at Thomas Carr Howe High School in Indianapolis and West Lafayette High School in the early 1960s. Her lessons on To Kill a Mockingbird were long remembered by her students. After marrying in 1961 and becoming a mother for the first time in 1965, she lived in New York, Connecticut, and Ohio, with six months in Paris, France, after the birth of her second child. Along the way, she taught conversational English to students from all over the world; was elected president of the Women's Guild of HItchcock Presbyterian Church, in Scarsdale, New York; was recognized as an honorary member of the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America; and lovingly served as a bridal consultant, in Southbury, Connecticut. Survivors include her husband of nearly 52 years, William J. McClintock, PhD, also a Monticello native; daughter Emily (McClintock) Lix, of Versailles, France; sons David and Joseph, of New York City; and granddaughters Katherine and Margaret. Following a private burial at Riverview Cemetery, family members will greet friends at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, at the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello. At 11:30 a.m., Pastor Tom Albaum will officiate a memorial service.
