James E. GRANNEN(1920 - 2013)


James E. Grannen, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, in Chicago, Illinois. Beloved husband of the late Alta C. (nee Feldman). Loving father of Sheila, Stuart and Laura. Dear grandfather of Farrell. Fond brother of Ann Geers, Joseph (Corinne), Patsy Jacobs, Edward (Phyllis), Nancy Driesbach and the late Mary Grannen. Mr. Grannen was born in Norwood, OH, the son of the late Edward A. and Mary Disser Grannen. Jim lived in various parts of the US, retiring to Hilton Head, SC. He moved to Chicago in 2011. Jim graduated from the University of Cincinnati, also attending New York and Harvard Universities. He served with honor in the Air Force in WWII. He spent his business life in the chemical industry, retiring as president of Buckman Laboratories. Jim and Alta travelled the world, enjoying life together for 57 years. Jim had a fine intellect, great curiosity and common sense. These, and a generous spirit, made for an exceptional man. Jim greatly enjoyed family and friends, the outdoors, reading, tinkering and more. Later in life, he was especially fond of spending time with his grandson, Farrell. Jim is fondly remembered for his sense of humor, his incredible work ethic, and his drive to improve his life and the lives of those close to him.
