Robert A. ANDERSON(1923 - 2013)


Robert A. Anderson, March 8, 2013. Bob was born August 23, 1923, in Steubenville, OH, the son of a U.S. Navy career officer, Arthur Anderson and his wife, Helen Anderson, raised in Cleveland, OH, attended John Marshall High School and Western Reserve University. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Infantry in 1941, was later wounded and hospitalized for many months while he regained his eyesight. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. After graduation from Western Reserve University, Bob entered the steel industry working in many capacities and cities. He settled in Cincinnati and founded Compass Steel Corporation in 1957. Additionally, he was founder and President of the Robert A. Anderson Company, Mid-South Metals, Inc. and Southern Metals, Inc. Bob retired many times, for the final time in 2012, after fifty plus years in the industry. Bob was an active Mason for more than fifty years, a member Alexandria Lodge #152; Ft. Thomas Chapter Royal Arch, Jeffries Council #33; a life member and Past Commander of Newport Commandery #13; Past Commander of Grand Commandery of Kentucky; a member of Scottish Rite, Royal Order of Jesters, Demolay and Past Board Member of Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital. In Cincinnati, he served as Commodore of Syrian Mariners, and was elected Potentate of Syrian Temple in 1973. At age 89, he was the oldest living Syrian Past Potentate until his death March 8, 2013. Bob was a Past Commander of American Legion Post #301 and Past Commander of V.F.W. Post #2533. A member of Yachting Club of America, Coral Oaks and Legends Country Clubs, YMCA, General Protestant Orphans Home, The Club International and Disabled American Veterans. In June of 1977, he married Shirley Exum, and then split their time between Cincinnati and Cape Coral, FL. In 2000, they built a "house in the mountains" in Massanutten, VA, commuting to and from FL. While in VA, Bob was active in many projects with the Lions Organization and made many, many friends. Bob was an avid boater, owning many different type and sizes of boats over the years. He was Treasurer Emeritus of Florida Shrine Mariners and active in the Araba Mariners of Florida. Bob is survived by his wife Shirley, preceded in death of wife Ruth Anderson, daughters Noreen Clifford, Debbie (Lanny) Burman, Karen (Junlei) Li and preceded in death by wife, June Bardes, daughter Valerie (Roger) Pettruson, stepson Steven Exum, preceded in death by stepdaughter Deborah (Tom) Exum- Styrkowicz, 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
