Thomas "Tom" SCHLAGER(1947 - 2012)

Thomas "Tom" F. Originally of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2012 in Wyoming, Ohio, at home and in the presence of family after a short illness. He was 65 years old. Tom was a devoted husband of 47 years, beloved father of four, adored grandfather of seven, caring brother, respected colleague and kind mentor to many. To have known Tom was to have known a man who was dedicated to family and friends, had a sincere generosity, and lived with strong faith and conviction. The son of the late Fred and Mary (nee Aubuchon) Schlager, Tom graduated from Bishop Hartley High School in Columbus as a multi-sport athlete. He married his high school sweetheart, Sandy Ater, while attending Xavier University on a full basketball scholarship. Tom played basketball for the Musketeers from 1965-1969, was a three-time letterman, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics.Tom began his career in the banking industry with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. He then spent 28 years with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, where he held several positions of increasing responsibility until retiring in 2009 as Senior Vice President of Bank Operations, as well as safe keeping and personnel. A loyal alumnus of Xavier University, Tom continued his support of the university by volunteering as a mentor to students in its business school. Tom very much enjoyed watching the Muskies on television and at the Cintas Center. A longtime resident of Wyoming, Tom was active in the community as a volunteer coach and a supporter of athletics at Wyoming and St. Xavier high schools, where his children and grandchildren attended, as well as Storm Club baseball. Tom also was an avid golfer, and for years enjoyed playing with colleagues and family locally and on annual trips to North Carolina and Florida. He was an active parishioner at St. James of the Valley Catholic Church, was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and had an enthusiasm for wood working.Tom is survived by his wife Sandy, sister Patty Schlager of Columbus, daughter Valerie, son Tom (Robbie), daughter Kristen (John) of South Orange, New Jersey, son Andrew (Caroline), grandchildren Aubrey, Christopher, Hailee, Carly, Alexander, Lauren and Mason. Visitation will be held Friday, October 26, 2012 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Gwen Mooney Funeral Home (513-853-1035). Additional visitation will be held Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. James of the Valley Catholic Church. All are welcome to join Tom's family in a celebration of his life at the Wyoming Golf Club from 11:00am-1:00pm. Private entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
