We never met, did we, Dan? Yet the scores of hours on the phone enthusing over chess problems and other matters made me think of you as a trusty brother. I can't help wishing that you will, in some way, return to us after, to use one of our favorite terms from chess composition, your Rundlauf.

December 1, 2012

I worked with Dan on a couple of projects a few years back. I was amazed at his technical insight & capabilites. He knew I like crossword puzzles, and he shared his Alpha Slueth game with me,which I found to be considerably more challenging. I will keep Dan and his family in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Aunt Priscilla, Steve, John, Paul, Jim, Randy, and all your loving families,

Please know that I am thinking of and praying for Dan and for all of you during this horrible time. What a shock it was to hear this dreaded news from Barb. I am so very sorry that I am in FL and unable to be there to give you a proper hug and share my condolences. What an amazingly smart and great guy cousin Dan was. How he excelled at things like chess and created puzzles I culdn't solve no matter how long I tried. The Meinkings surely got all the super brain cells somehow. Though we don't all get together often, Jim and I were always happy when we did. And of course, we continue to be family and support each other in good times and bad. You were all so good to me when I lost Jim last February, and I feel terrible that I was not there to help to remember Dan and celebrate his life. Please take care of yourselves. I will continue you all in my prayers. Love, Peggy

I thought I would take this moment to first thank you all for your kind words. Losing my brother so suddenly has been painful to say the least.

But I also wanted to share a little story with you. I submitted an image of Dan receiving $300 for winning the 1984 GEM City [Dayton, OH] Open. The story behind the story is that he would never have won without me. Mind you I never beat him at chess, but I did have the $$ for his entry fee. What happened is that he woke me up at 7am the morning of the tournament and asked for $50. Realize that, in 1984, yours truly slept in until 10AM or later on Saturdays. So, I wasn't happy. I got paid the day before and he knew it. I only had 20's in my wallet so I offered $40. He countered, asking for $60. And I thought I was upset before. I gave it to him insisting he pay me back after the tournament and he agreed. Much to my dismay, he won the darn thing. I got my money back, but lost what I really wanted, which was hold it against him that he owed me (like a good brother).

If you look at the image, you will see there was much higher rated players in the tourney. But he came to play as he always did.

Dear family members, I am sorry for your loss.

Dan would often joke with me about Rundlaufs -- that's a chess-problem term about returning to where you started from, but by a different route. "Happy Rundlaufing," he would say to me if he knew I was about to set out on some hike. Now that's what I would like to say to him.

I've moved around and haven't kept up with people from High School but I remember Dan and his strong interest in chess. He was smart, he was interesting, and he was just an all round nice guy. He will be missed.

Brilliant and creative. Excelled at any game. He started playing drums in his 20's and attempted to cover Jeff Beck's music.
His passing is a shock and gives pause for reflection. Our thoughts are with the family & friends.

Dan was truly a wonderful indvidual who will sorely be missed. Recently we figured out where we knew each other which was at old employer back in the 80's. I second George Sphicas's comments. In my last e-mail exchange with him recently, I placed him among the all-time great American chess problemists. He will indeed be missed by this small community and I'm sure by many others as well.

Dan was a great friend, long-time of mine and my family's, and we will miss him dearly. I met him through the Cincinnati Chess Club in about 1984. He was almost the only one around Cincinnati in those years to compose chess problems. For years I just enjoyed solving (occasionally cooking) his problems. Economy of force, consistently thematic lines of play and shock value were staples in his very modern presentations. Through Dan, I met many other composers in person and even tried my own hand at that art, so now I consider myself a solver/composer, thanks to Dan. Together we attended the Good Companions (U.S. Chess Problem Society) meetings in the years, roughly, 2000-2002. I wish those meetings had continued, as they were always interesting with regard to chess, but moreso, they were just plain fun experiences, hanging around with good people. For a time, several friends locally in Cincinnati, including Dan and I, formed a basement band, in which Dan played drums. At that art he was always striving for more, same as in his chess problems. When he more or less gave up drumming, he gave some percussion equipment to my son, who is now majoring in Jazz Studies, percussion, at Ohio State. When my son heard the news, he too, was struck with sadness. It was good hearing from others in these memorial notes, too, some of whom I have not heard from in a while. Of course, I wish it were under better circumstances. Like you, I feel terrible about this loss of a great friend and colleague, and express my sincerest sympathies to Dan's family.

Dan was one of the best-known chess problem composers in the world. He has made a big mark in the world of chess problemists, his name easily recognized and associated with excellence and originality. His impressive skills and great imagination produced many wonderful works of art that will carry his name and continue to produce joy and admiration. His legacy will live for ever. I always admired his good sense of humor, his ability to work hard on some challenging compositions, and his determination to achieve some specific target. He generously shared ideas and suggestions, and had several joint works with many, including myself. He will be dearly missed.
Deep sympathy to his family.

I met Dan in 2002; he was part of a small group of Problemists on a chess site. The five (give, or take) of us would spend hours together talking, solving etc. I have always admired his patience, and ability to share, and teach. His passing is a huge loss. My condolences to Dan's family and friends.
