Roger Kersh Obituary

KERSH

Roger Kemper Kersh, 75, died June 11, 2011 in Cincinnati. Cincinnati is also where he lived, worked and raised his family. Roger was born March 24, 1936 in Elmwood Place and married his college sweetheart, Joann Heck, on September 2, 1961 after graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. in Chemistry. He also earned a M.A. in Teaching from Miami University in Oxford. Roger spent the next 30 years teaching at Reading High School while raising three children. He worked hard as a teacher, husband and father to make sure that all of his children graduated from college. Roger and Joann were always active in their church and various charities. Roger spent his many retirement years with family and friends. He was a member of the Breakfast Clubs and the "captain" of the shuffleboard teams at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. Roger's laugh and dedication will be greatly missed. Roger was preceded in death by his five brothers and sisters: Carl (Mary) Kersh, Mervin (Rilla) Kersh, Frances (Marvin) Mosier, George (Rose) Wolpert and Charlene (Lou) Salzer. Roger is survived by his wife, Joann Heck Kersh; three children, Margaret Frances (Harry) Lekien, Kevin Joseph Kersh, Dianna Lee Newman; and one grandchild, Delaney Frances Lekien. Funeral service Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 11:00 am at Christ United Methodist Church, 700 S. Marshall Rd., Middletown, OH 45044. Visitation from 10:00 am until time of service. Rev. Norman H. Coleman III officiating. Interment at Rest Haven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society, 2808 Reading Rd., Cincinnati, Oh 45206. My heart is heavy with this news. My condolences and prayers are with his family.I had him for both Chemistry and Organic Chemistry and have yet to experience another science class quite the same way. He was unique and genuine; one of my favorite teachers. His sense of humor, laughter and even that crooked smile made everyone around him smile. May you continue to be blessed by those memories, as I will always treasure mine!

My thoughts & prayers to the Kersh family. I loved having "Kershipoo" as my chemistry teacher. We also would buy him carnations when being sold for special events. It was also nice to drop off the $ from Kings Island to him. Thanks for the fond memories.

Mr. Kersh was an outstanding teacher, and so kind and funny. I know I was a top chemistry student in college because Mr. Kersh taught me so well. My RHS class of 1970 has a reunion every 5 years, and when we reminisce about our favorite teachers, Mr.Kersh is always mentioned. My condolences to his family.

Never had the pleasure of having Mr. Kersh for a teacher as science was NOT my forte, but I do remember hearing his laughter in the halls and knowing that that meant that all was right with the world! My homeroom was on that hallway and it was a great way to begin your day - hearing him and his colleagues laughing - probably at something silly one of us had done or said! Rusty and I are greatly saddened by the news of Roger's death. He, along with Bob Mixon, Bonnie Wilson and Dick Thielmeyer, were mentors to me when I came to teach at Reading at the tender age of 21 in 1967. Roger was a wonderful teacher and professional friend. I hope the family can take some comfort in knowing how well he was respected by his students and colleagues. Dan Siegfried
