Mary May (Peters) SHACKELFORD Obituary

Mary May Peters was born in Mariemont, Ohio, in 1927 to Irma Craggs and Earl Peters, the first generation born in that planned community. She passed on a love for well-designed communities to generations of her family. She attended First Unitarian Church in Cincinnati with her parents and learned about many faiths in Sunday school. She liked it when people respected her right not to believe as they did. She graduated from Miami University, a history major, and married high school friend William Allen Shackelford in 1948, living almost her entire adult life on the west side of Cincinnati. She gave birth to four children between 1950 and 1957. Probably never a day went by when Mary didn't read, whether it was under the covers at night as a child, to her children every day until they could read on their own, or as a professional librarian when she would read late into the night after she had finished library work and housework. She was adept at providing clean second-hand clothes, and making frequent trips to the library, using limited money to provide a home library, including Shakespeare, Poe, Encyclopedia Britannica, National Geographic, Time, Life, and Sports Illustrated. She was a conservationist by habit, having gone on many long walks in southern Ohio woods with her father in her youth. She was also a historian and map reader, and transferred much knowledge of Cincinnati to her children. By the time they could drive, they all knew how to get to the Art Museum, Natural History Museum, and Historical Society. She went with her grandchildren to museums, parks, pools, and of course, the library. Mary studied at Miami University and Mt. St. Joseph College to complete her Masters in Library Science, working first at Western Hills H. S. and then at Dater Jr. High until she retired. She traveled to Europe, Russia, Africa, and the Middle East with other librarians specializing in children's literature. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Robert, her son Andrew, and her younger brother Tom, who lived in her household for almost 45 years. Following Tom's death, she moved to Swan Creek Retirement Village in Toledo, OH, where she enjoyed the social and cultural activities, volunteered with the library and Life Care card making, and became known by the nickname "Petie," given her by her husband. Petie was happy with her new life in Toledo except that she found Toledo "too flat." She is survived by her sister Jan Peters of Santa Rosa, Eric Shackelford of San Francisco, Sarah (Howard) Shackelford Abts of Toledo, and Jim Shackelford (Maritza Alvarez) of Bloomington, IN, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren, all much better off because of her quiet leadership. A memorial service will be held at Reed Chapel at Swan Creek Retirement Village on March 27, at 4 p.m. Visitation will be from 3:30 until 4 p.m. and following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Swan Creek Life Care Commitment or any library or park. Blanchard-Strabler Funeral Home (419) 269-1111. Online condolences:
