Frank Sheldon, 54, died Thursday, March 24, 2011 at the University of Louisville Hospital. Frank was a kind and gentle soul who will be missed by family, friends, colleagues and students, but especially by his two children. Frank grew up in Saylor Park, Cincinnati after which he attended the University of Cincinnati and went on to earn a PhD from Northwestern University. Frank spent his life as a history professor at Hanover College, where he found a home in the world of ideas. As a history professor he strove to find the common humanity in all people, both living and dead, and to treat everybody's story with compassion and respect. To Frank, the most important things in life were his two children. In their time spent together they enjoyed watching cartoons, cooking, and sitting around together chatting about life. They will carry him in their hearts as they journey through life. Frank is survived by his children Rebecca Luttmer and Zachary Luttmer, his best friend and former wife Catherine Luttmer, his friend and former significant other Melissa Eden, his brother Greg Luttmer(Suzy), his nieces Molly and Emma, his parents Janet and Frank Luttmer, and many devoted friends and colleagues. There will be a Celebration of Life service Saturday, April 2 from 1-4 pm at Arch Heady Cralle Funeral Home, 2428 Frankfort Ave, Louisville, KY. A memorial service will also be held by Hanover College Friday April 1 at 3 pm in Donner Lecture Hall. Memorial gifts may be made to the Frank Luttmer Study Abroad Grant at Hanover College, Hanover, IN 47243.
