John Gholson Kittredge , 80, a resident of Arundel ME and formerly of Cincinnati, OH, died peacefully at his home Tuesday, June 11, 2013 after a long illness. John was born December 17, 1932 in Cincinnati, OH, the son of Robert L. and Elise Kupferschmid Kittredge. He graduated from Ashville School and Yale University, where he received both his BA Arch. and MA Arch. Before completing his education John served two years in the US Army. John practiced architecture in Cincinnati, Ohio from 1962 to 1975. During that period, he also taught architecture at Ohio University in Athens OH from 1967 to 1969, and Miami University of Ohio from 1969 to 1975. After moving to Maine in 1975, John became a general contractor, and was co-founder of the Trades Center Construction firm in Biddeford, where he designed and built numerous residential and commercial buildings in the southern Maine area from 1975 to 1990. Active in the community, John was a member of the South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport, where he sang in the choir and served the congregation in various capacities. John also enjoyed being a part of Rotary International, was an early member of River Tree Arts organization when it was formed in the early 1980's, served on the board of the former Salmon Falls School, and served on the Arundel Planning Board. A lifelong advocate of community development, John supported various causes like United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Sustainable Harvest, and Oxfam. John is predeceased by a brother Robert Kittredge, and survived by a sister Ann Kittredge Healy of Winnetka, IL. Other survivors include his wife Cornelia Nyce Kittredge of Arundel; his daughter Marie Kittredge (Clark Broida) of Cleveland OH; his sons Fletcher Kittredge (Katie) of Biddeford, John Thomas Kittredge (Charles Morehead) of Cambridge, MA, and David Kittredge (Elizabeth Hallett) of Brooklyn, NY; and his nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at the South Congregational Church, 2 North St. Kennebunkport, ME, with Reverend Charles Whiston officiating.
