Dr. Allen A. Sher
Asheville - Allen A. Sher, 91, of Asheville died at the John F. Keever Solace Center on Thursday, May 2, 2013. He was born on November 22, 1921, in Brooklyn, NY. He resided in Laurelton, NY, Rutland VT and Flat Rock, Hendersonville and Brevard, NC, before moving to Asheville in 1998.
He was married for 50 years to the late Ruth Sher. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Sher and his daughter Dory Ehrlich-Gruber.
He is survived by his son Steven and his wife Anita; by his son-in-law Paul Gruber; by his grandchildren Allison Feinberg, Marc Sher and his wife Celia and Emily Somberg and her husband Guy; by his great grandchildren Gregory and Molly Feinberg and Nate and Charlie Sher; by his sister Florence Berkowitz; and by other nieces and family members.
He was a graduate of Brooklyn College, the University of Nebraska and Columbia University. He was a teacher at all levels, including more than 25 years in the New York City public schools. He was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps, having served in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II.
He was a member of Congregation Beth HaTephila and the Kiwanis Club of Asheville.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Monday, May 6, 2013, at Congregation Beth Ha Tephila. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to the L'Dor V'Dor Building Fund, Congregation Beth HaTephila, 43 North Liberty Street, Asheville NC 28801.

I knew Dr. Sher in a professional capacity and I will miss seeing him. He was such a pleasant and cheerful person. I am sad to know he is gone.

So many wonderful memories of a dear and generous uncle. How he loved to share his treasury of stories with us over the years. A raconteur and teacher to the end. My love and condolences to the rest of the family.
