Brittie Mae Deitz Buchanan Sylva - Brittie Mae Deitz Buchanan, 85, of East Fork Road in Sylva, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, after a long period of declining health. She was the daughter of the late Ransom Vanderbilt Deitz and Mamie Deitz and last living member of their family of 10 children. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Howard Tatham Buchanan; three daughters, Vivien Bateman of Weaverville and Connie Danner and Cathy Ensley of Sylva; three sons, Howard Buchanan, Jr. of Canton; Gary Buchanan, of Sylva; and Jimmy Buchanan of Clyde; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and step great-grandchildren. She was a member of Deitz Memorial Baptist Church since its founding. A devoted homemaker known for her cooking and generous hospitality, she crafted a modest home into a focal point of happy memories that would be the envy of an opulent mansion, overseeing generations of gatherings of import for family and friends. These ranged from holiday celebrations, weddings and funerals to more modest events such as the arrival of the season's tomatoes from the garden the family tended for decades. She was an unerringly kind woman who always put others before herself, their concerns before hers, a woman who practiced her Christianity with humility, foreign to the habits of looking down on others or speaking ill of anyone (including those who deserved it). She loved nothing more than her considerable spread of children and grandchildren, tracking their travails and reveling in their achievements; the phrase "get off my lawn' was foreign to her, as she delighted in having a pack of kids gamboling about near at hand. She was the steadfast wife of one of the last of the great old mountain bear hunters, often waiting nervously far into the night for a safe return of her husband from some far-off ridge or gorge. Never a woman of means, she gave of herself constantly as a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and wife. In doing so she crafted a legacy that will be remembered with a smile by all who knew her. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Melton Funeral Home, Sylva. Read Obituary
