Alec L. "Skip" Gaines

Columbia - A memorial service for Alec L. "Skip" Gaines, 65 will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2012 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be held in January in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Candler, N.C.

Mr. Gaines died peacefully at his home Saturday, December 15, 2012 following an extended battle with esophageal cancer. Born in Newport News, Virginia, he was the son of the late Alec L. Gaines, Sr. and Audrey Mae Kaufelt Gaines. He was the devoted husband of Carolyn Payne Gaines. A 1965 graduate of York High School, Yorktown, VA, he attended Christopher Newport University and graduated in 1972 from Thomas Nelson Community College. He served in the US Air Force, stationed in Takhli, Thailand during the Vietnam War. Mr. Gaines retired in 2007 from Ferguson Enterprises following 34 years of service. He was a charter member of Rawls Creek Country Club where he enjoyed golfing.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn Gaines; sisters, Shirley Anne Witt and her husband, Jimmy, of Yorktown, VA, Linda Gail Williamson and her husband, Jim, of Seaford, VA, Kathy Lynn Sanders and her husband, Ricky, of Gloucester, VA; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his canine companion, Lizzie.
