Whitesides, Sr.

Asheville - Alfred J. "AJ" Whitesides, Sr. departed this life Sunday, October 6, 2013. A lifelong resident of Asheville, he was a son of Jetter and Emma J. Whitesides.

Alfred was in one of the first African-American platoons to serve in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He started his career in banking at First National Bank & Trust Company and retired from Asheville Savings Bank. He was an active member at Hopkins Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where he formerly served on the Steward and Trustee Boards.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of almost 70 years, Magnolia Kilgore Whitesides; sons, Alfred Jr. (Shirley) of Asheville and Kenneth (Edithe) of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren, Sherry Poole of Houston, TX, Kimberly Wilson (Andre) of Asheville, Michelle Gourdine (Larry) of Champaign, IL and Kenneth Whitesides (Regina) of Pelham, AL; great grandsons, Erik Whitesides, Patrick Poole, Adrian Wilson, Tyson and Landon Gourdine; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Louise Smith and Catherine Williams; a special niece, Dorothy Townsend.

Services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m. at Hopkins Chapel A.M.E. Church. Rev. Keith L. Lipsey and Elder Herbert Grand will officiate, burial will be Monday, October 14th at Noon in WC State Veteran's Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 until 7 p.m. in the chapel of Hart Funeral Service.
