Daniel Reid Smith
Asheville - Daniel Reid Smith, 58, of Asheville passed away October 28, 2012. He was the son of Bernard Reid Smith Jr. and the late Dorothy Danielson Smith.
Affectionately known as Dan, he attended Asheville Country Day School and Asheville High. He also attended Hargrave Military Academy. He was a past member of Boy Scout Troop #24 and the Elks Lodge
BPOE. Dan spent many years in HVAC industry.
Dan loved everything about aviation, from R.C. planes to full size. He had his private pilot's license and loved to fly. He was an avid hang glider too, and earned the prestigious Order of the Raven. He loved to sit and watch the clouds and dream of being among them.
Dan is survived by his wife, Colleen Kingsbury Smith, step-daughters Madeline and husband, Keith Melton of Asheville and Amanda Kingsbury of Spokane, Wash. He is also survived by a sister, Page S. Petty and husband, Joseph T. Petty of Landrum ,SC; a neice, Francis A. Vaughn and her husband, Mark of Campobello, SC; a nephew, Reay Rountree and wide, Carrie of Charleston, SC; a step-niece, Susan P. Kern and husband, Brian of Spartanburg, SC; great-nephew, Brayden Rountree, Step great-nephew Eli Kern and step great-niece, Ella Kern.
The family would like to thank the Riceville and Buncombe County EMT for their quick response and expert care. Also, a big thank-you to the Mission Hospital E.R. staff; Dr. Mark Rorie, cardiologist; Michelle RN nights, and the staff of the CICU. Your professional care and compassion was exceptional.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 1, 2012. This will take place in the Library at the North Carolina Arboretum. Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home for Children, 80 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
