George Douglas Morrison

Black Mountain - George Douglas Morrison, 87, went to be with the Lord on June 30, 2013. He was born in Union City, New Jersey on May 25, 1926 to the late George and Gertrude Morrison.

In 1943, during George's senior year at Union Hill High School, army recruiters challenged those who academically and physically qualified, an opportunity to enroll in an Army Specialized Training Program at Virginia Military Institute.

Following training at VMI, he was sent to Fort McClellan, Alabama and served in the 12th Armored Division of the United States Army. He was wounded on April 10, 1945, in Germany and awarded a Purple Heart, along with a Combat Infantry Badge and a Bronze Star for Gallantry.

George was employed with Eastern Airlines for 30 years in Miami, FL and Atlanta, GA. In 1985, he retired to Montreat, NC and served as mayor for two terms.

Mr. Morrison is survived by his loving wife, Elaine, of 65 years; son, Doug Morrison; daughters, Susan Martin, Kathy Corless and Becky Dreiling, 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

A burial service, with full military honors, will be held at the Western Carolina State Veteran Cemetery at 10:00 am, Wednesday July 3, followed by a Celebration of Life service at Christ Community Church in Montreat in Gaither Chapel at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
