ASHEVILLE - Gretel Marie (Bailey) Stubbs, 75, passed away at the Deerfield Retirement Community in Asheville, North Carolina, on November 3, 2012; the cause of death was ovarian cancer. She was born on October 30, 1937, in Fair Oaks, Pennsylvania, the youngest child of Louis Bailey and Gano (Hoover) Bailey. She was raised in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and graduated from Ridgewood High School. In 1960, she received a B.A. from the University of Michigan
, Ann Arbor, and upon graduation moved to Manhattan, where she worked for the National Council of Churches. On June 12, 1963, she was married to Donald Stubbs. After a number of happy years in Greenwich Village and Peter Cooper Village (Manhattan), in 1976 Gretel and Don moved to Summit, New Jersey, with their children. In Summit, Gretel was a member of Christ Church and became a skilled master gardener. She was deeply committed to the environmental movement and an avid early proponent of recycling. In 1997, Gretel and Don retired to Asheville, North Carolina. Gretel's smile lit up a room. She possessed an unfailingly enthusiastic, kind, and fun-loving spirit, and she extended unconditional love to her three daughters. Throughout her life, she was sustained by her passionate engagement with poetry and her love of the outdoors. She is greatly missed by all who knew her and her husband, Don; daughters, Katherine (of China, Maine), Emily (Brooklyn, New York) and Christina (Brooklyn, New York); and sister, Anne (Manhattan).
