Asheville - Jack Franklin Greene, 91, of Asheville, NC, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2013. Born October 17, 1921, he was the son of Claude A. and Myrtle B. Green. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Grace D. Greene who died in 2011. He is survived by two daughters, Loretta Greene, and Susan Greene, both of Leicester, NC.
He graduated from Leicester High School in 1940, when it was housed in the basement of the old Biltmore High School. After graduation and a brief period working in a mill, he enlisted in the US Navy. His first assignment was on the USS Waller which held special memories for him. He was a proud veteran of three wars, WWII
, Korea, and Vietnam. Upon retirement after 22 years in the Navy, he worked for Square D until he retired again.
He was a member of Abernethy United Methodist Church and a past member of the Masons, Lions Club (secretary), Fleet Reserve, and a Master Gardener. He was a member of the Buncombe County Veterans Council, and a charter member of the Memorial Team which honored so many of his fellow veterans.
In September of 2008, he was privileged to be a part of the Honor Flight to Washington, DC. During the experience, he enjoyed the trip, the companionship of the other veterans, and the thanks of a grateful nation.
The funeral and burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
