Asheville - John James "Jack" Hanley, 68, of North Pershing Road, Asheville, died Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the Charles George VA Medical Center.
Mr. Hanley was born in NYC and was a son of the late James J. and Eleanor Towers Hanley. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Albert Towers, sister-in-law, Hazel Towers, and sister Alice A. Rhinehart.
He was a Purple Heart
recipient with the US Army in Vietnam and worked as a special education teacher at A.C. Reynolds High School for 28 years.
Mr. Hanley was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the NCRSP and the NCAE, as well as Elks Club
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Campbell Hanley; stepchildren, Heather Fawcett Hoium (Tony) of Dunedin, FL and Christopher Thomas Fawcett of Swannanoa; step-grandsons Drake Fawcett, USN, and Spencer Hoium; sisters, Helena Hanley Johnson (Charles C.), and Mary Hanley Jackson; brother-in-law Kenneth L. Rhinehart; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 9 at the Elk's Lodge, 232 Haywood Street, Asheville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elk's Club Christmas Shoe Party, PO Box 1740, Asheville NC 28802.
The family expresses their sincere appreciation to the staff of the VA Medical Center for the excellent care they provided to Mr. Hanley.
