RALEIGH - John Elwood Shackelford died Sunday, February 6 at age 80 in Raleigh, N.C. from complications due to a lengthy illness. A longtime resident of Asheville, N.C., Shackelford was living at Falls River Court Memory Care Community in Raleigh at the time of his death.
Mr. Shackelford was born on September 25, 1930 in Antigo, Wisconsin, the son of John and Ollie Shackelford. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and the University of North Carolina Law School. He was also a graduate of the Education For Ministry program at Sewanee: The University of the South and later served as a mentor. Shackelford was an attorney in Asheville for many years, first practicing with the law firm, Uzzell and DuMont, and later with Riddle, Shackelford, and Hyler. He was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church and later The Cathedral of All Souls. He gave quietly and generously of his time and expertise to many in the community.
Mr. Shackelford was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Boldt and his nephew, Ed Boldt. He is survived by members of his family; Mimi Shackelford; Darden, David, Katherine, and William Coe; John, Conchie, Avery, Sadie, Michaela, and Tessa Shackelford; Rom, Adam, and Sarah Youen; Nancy Zehms, Barb Gallegos, and Randy Boldt; Rose Marie Shackelford.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Falls River Court and Hospice of Wake County for their dedication and loving care given to Papa Shac.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 13 at 2 p.m. at The Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville, N.C. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends in The Owen Library at the church from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County: 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
