Larry Justus

Larry L. Justus

Fletcher - Larry L. Justus, 80, of White Pine Drive, Fletcher, North Carolina, died Wednesday, August 21 at Valor Hospice of the Charles George Veterans Affairs Medical Center after a period of declining health.

He had retired from the Asheville Citizen-Times following a 37 year career of helping produce the daily editions of the newspaper. He worked in various capacities in the composing room, where the newspaper is put together page by page. His first duties involved proof-reading stories written by the news staff, an important part of the production process. He later learned to operate a linotype machine, on which the individual lines of a story - at that time - were cast in lead slugs.

Those days are long past now. With the advent of computers and other modern equipment, newspaper production changed forever. But Larry went with the flow, learning with others how to operate some of those devices.

He knew the composing room inside-out, able to handle almost any job there.

A talkative man, Larry enjoyed conversing with friends and relatives. He could tell many stories of his experiences, including his four years in the U.S. Navy. He visited many ports throughout the world and always had a tale to tell - some of them pretty tall tales, too.

Trout fishing and pitching horseshoes - at which he was very good - were two of his favorite outdoor activities.

A versatile person, Larry had, in his younger years been a tour guide who chauffeured many busloads of people to various mountain attractions, a bread delivery truck driver, a minister, and in retirement, turned to woodworking. He designed and built tables, cabinets, decorative clock cases and unique walking canes.

A 1975 graduate of the Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute's ministerial program, he was a minister for more than 20 years.

Surviving him are his loving wife of 54 years, Marilyn Kolb Justus; a daughter, Cindi Ledford (Dave) of Fletcher, two sons, Timothy Justus (Diana) of Charlotte, Michael Justus (Amanda) of Spartanburg, South Carolina; a granddaughter, Alayna Justus; and a grandson, Eli Ledford.

A memorial service for Larry will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 24, At Emma United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phillip Park officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m., until the hour of the service.

Asheville Mortuary Service is assisting the family.
