Asheville - Marjorie Harris Thomas, 91, of Riverview Church Rd., Asheville, died Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at the VA Hospital.
Raised in Madison Co., she was a daughter of the late Rev. J. Weldon Harris and Julia Mace Harris. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Clay Thomas, and sister Helen Fowler.
Mrs. Thomas graduated from Walnut High School in 1939. She joined the U.S. Army
(WAC) during WWII. She was very proud of her service, and served on the Buncombe Co. Veteran's Council. She retired from NOAA in the Arcade building, and also worked for the Asheville Police Department until the age of 85, most recently in the records room.
Mrs. Thomas was a former member of the St. Lawrence Council of the Catholic Daughters of America and was a charter member of The St. Joan of Arc Council. She served several state offices as well as local Regent.
Mrs. Thomas is survived by daughters Virginia Guthrie and husband Grant, and G.G. Hampton and husband Ernest; sons Michael T. Godleski, Ted Godleski and wife Shirley, Tom Godleski and wife Terri, and Andy Godleski; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fr. Frank Seabo officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave.
