Suffolk, VA - McKinley Cave, 72, passed peacefully on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 prior to his birthday. He was born on June 15, 1941 in Asheville to the late Herman and Evie Brown Cave. McKinley was a graduate of Stephens-Lee High School Class of 1959. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy
and retired after 20 years of service. He then worked for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for several years. McKinley was the recipient of three Good Conduct Medals and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Cuba). His military career enabled him to travel around the world and gain insight into many different cultures. He was a member of Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church and served as a deacon, past superintendent of the Sunday school, a member of the senior choir and secretary of Men United for Christ.
McKinley was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward, Gerald and Harold Cave.
Surviving family to cherish his memory include his daughter, Sharette L. Cave-Ponton (Christopher) of Suffolk, VA; granddaughters, Damacita Cave and Christiney Ponton of Suffolk, VA; nephew, Andre Cave, Asheville; niece, Tammi Cave-Lucas of Las Vegas, NV; sister-in-law, Kokeeta Cave of Asheville; two wonderful friends, Reginald Robinson and Rosa Dillingham of Asheville; other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be 1 PM Wednesday, Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church with Elder Alfred Blount officiating. Burial will be in Violet Hill Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Navy. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service.
