MSGT. Ret. Buford Fred McClure

Asheville - MSGT. Ret. Buford Fred McClure, 80, of Asheville, passed away on July 13th, 2013. He was born January 15th, 1933, in Athens, GA, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred and Phoebe McClure.

Mr. McClure is survived by his wife of 57 years, Johanna; his daughter, Diane Messer; and four grandchildren.

He was one of seven children, with Mary Jane Crowley being the only sibling to survive him. He has much loved nieces and nephews and family in Atlanta, GA.

He survived his daughter, Betina Kuhn in 2001, and also a baby daughter, Michelle McClure in 1960.

Mr. McClure was drafted into the Army in May of 1953 during the Korean War and decided to make a career of the military. He served in Germany, Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star and four Army Commendation Medals. He retired in 1973 after completing a BS degree at Cameron College in Lawton, OK to pursue a career in finance.

Mr. McClure worked for 7 years at "Land of Sky Regional Council" in Asheville as finance director. He was involved in a number of volunteer opportunities, including Thorn's Rehab Hospital, Free Tax Service for the Elderly, and Search and Rescue, (with his trained dog), for missing persons, like hunters and children.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday, August 2nd, 2:00 PM, at the Western Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery in Black Mountain.
