BARNARDSVILLE - On Thursday, November 29th, 2012 Jean Wilson Allen entered into the presence of God surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Great granddaughter of the legendary Big Tom Wilson, Jean was a daughter of Denver and Mary Wilson of Yancey County. She raised her four children in Barnardsville where she instilled in them the values of loving God, working hard, and being generous to anyone who needed a helping hand. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, William Edmond Allen and survived by her children Elaine Hensley and husband Norval of Barnardsville, Stephen Allen and his wife Wanda of Barnardsville, Teresa Stiles and husband Bobby of Burnsville, and Mary Wiseman and husband David of Spruce Pine; grandchildren Billy Allen, Kara Anderson, Lisa Roberts, Jessica Hensley, Adam Stiles, Amanda Allen, Amanda Wiseman, Derrick Wiseman; and great grandchildren Nash Allen, Hunter Sprinkle, and Melody Wiseman. She is also survived by brothers Ward Wilson, Don Wilson and Bill Wilson. Three other siblings, Ethel Earwood, Ed Wilson and Max Wilson had passed away before her death.
Mrs. Allen attended Burnsville High School. Her fondest memories of school are playing basketball. Growing up with five brothers equipped her to be a tough competitor. As she grew older, she took great joy in yearly high school reunions with her dear classmates.
Mrs. Allen attended Woodland Hills Church where she was a member of the Joyful Adults Sunday School class. She was always busy with her gardening, canning, sewing, quilting, crocheting and cooking for her family and friends. She continued to work outside the home until she was seventy-four . Not only did she provide for her family, but was always willing to lend a hand to others in need. Her passion in life was helping others, and through that passion, her legacy will live on.
A celebration of Thanksgiving to God for Mrs. Allen's life will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Service, 7626 Highway 213, Mars Hill, NC on Sunday, December 2, 2012 immediately following visitation which will begin at 2:00 pm. Pastors Bob Belford, Jim Crayton, and David Wiseman will conduct the service. The family would like to express deep gratitude to the staff of Yancey House who so lovingly cared for our mother during the past eight months.
