Roger Bean, Jr.

Asheville - Ervin "Monk" Roger Bean, Jr., 87, of Asheville passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center after an extended illness of pulmonary fibrosis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin Roger Bean, Sr. and Annie Davis Bean; paternal grandparents, Samuel Isaac and Marie Rogers Bean; maternal grandparents, John Carmer Davis and Katie Hartsfield Davis of Wilmington, NC; brother, Carmer Davis Bean and a special cousin, Merline Neidermayer (James) of Texas. His first wife of twenty years, Emily Baker Bean also predeceased him.

A 1945 graduate of Lee Edwards (now Asheville) High School, he attended NC State University before beginning a lifetime career with his family business, S. I. Bean Tile and Marble Company. Their local business founded in 1894, continued for 100 years. Following retirement, Roger helped build 36 homes for Asheville Habitat.

He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, The Rhododendron Brigade of Guards and was an honorary member of the Country Club of Asheville.

Roger was such a kind, gentle man with great love for people as well as animals. His favorite hobby was boating, having built his first boat at age 16. He, his family and many friends enjoyed many years at Lake Lure.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Theodora D. "Teddy" Bean; their son, Jeffrey M. Tomberlin (Miriam) and two granddaughters, Jordan and Abigail Tomberlin all of Merritt Island, FL whom he loved dearly. Also surviving are his beloved one and only sister, Haldane Hartsfield Ball (David) of Asheville; niece, Kathy Balakrishman (Sri) and nephew, Ervin Ball (Lou Anne) both of Ohio and niece, Theresa Mucheburg (Bob) of Arizona; sisters-in-law, Wanda Foster (Mickey) of Asheville and her children, Michael and Amy, Gail Pugh of Asheville and family, Glenna Dillingham of Loganville, GA and family along with many nieces and nephews. His sister-in-law, Wanda, a retired registered nurse of more than thirty years, has visited Roger every month over the last two years to administer his medical shots. She has been a faithful caregiver to both Mr. and Mrs. Bean.

Interment will be in the family section of Riverside Cemetery on August 28, 2014. The family has requested that the burial be private, however, they would like to greet everyone at a reception immediately following at the Country Club of Asheville from 12:00 - 2:00 PM.

The entire staff of CarePartners was so wonderful to all of the Bean family. They would particularly like to extend thanks and appreciation for the excellent care of Roger to Dr. James B. Hoer and nurse Camilla, his caregivers, Donna Wright, Carolyn Price, Barbara Ingle, Keri Roberts and Tiffany Harmon, wonderful home care hospice nurse, Becky Gilbert, CNA, Kathy Philbeck and social services representative, Deb Lloyd. They are all wonderful, dedicated people.
