Asheville - F. (Francis) Richard Bornhurst passed away peacefully on December 11, 2012 at the age of 93.
He was born to the late Frank R. Bornhurst and Maria Anna Schill in Syracuse, New York on September 26, 1919, the second of five children. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1942 with a degree in Civil Engineering and married Barbara Wells later that year.
He served in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and the Admiralty Islands as a senior grade lieutenant with the civil engineering corps of the Navy (Sea Bees). Returning to Syracuse, he and his brother Jerome (Jerry) joined their father in his steel erecting company, Bornhurst Inc. He was an active member of the Syracuse Builders Exchange, the Building Trades Employers Assoc. of CNY, St. Ann's Church and the Cavalry Golf Club, both in Manlius, New York. He raised his family in Manlius and retired in Asheville, North Carolina in 1988.
He is preceded in death by sister Mary Bornhurst, brother Jerome, and sister Catherine Appleton. His brother, Dr. Robert (Keith) Bornhurst lives in Syracuse. He is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Barbara Wells Bornhurst, sons Richard (Christine) of Asheville, Roger of Syracuse, Robert of Salida, Colorado, and daughter Cheryl (Roy) Trowbridge of Santa Cruz, California, grandchildren Hannah Bornhurst, Allison and Adam Trowbridge, a great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.
No services are planned. Groce Funeral Home on Long Shoals Road is assisting the family. A private burial will be at the Western Carolina State Veterans' Cemetery in Black Mountain.
