Frank Martin Obituary

ASHEVILLE - Frank J. Martin, 91, of Asheville, died peacefully in his sleep of old age Monday, March 18, 2013, at John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he was the son of the late Frank J. and Helen G. Martin. He pursued a life-long career as an engineer, and dedicated himself to community service. He graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1943 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy where he served in the Pacific as Radar Maintenance Officer for the Navy's first carrier-based Night-fighter Aircraft Squadron during WW II. He started his civilian engineering career working for his father and quickly moved on to AMF where he spent 16 years leading efforts to install Automatic Bowling Machines throughout North America, Europe and, Japan, including in the White House.

His career took him and his family from Buffalo to Shelby Ohio, to Darien Conn., and eventually to Asheville where he lived out his remaining 30 years as a proud citizen, transitioning into semi-retirement. He continued to serve by teaching Management at UNCA and Engineering at A-B Tech, while staying active in local civic affairs such as the Asheville Civitan Club where he served as President of the Civitan Foundation twice, as well as Chairman of both the Scholarship Program and the Good Citizenship Program.

Frank also served as Coordinator of the Coalition for Scenic Beauty for 20 years, where he worked tirelessly to limit sprawling billboards in Asheville - his proudest accomplishment. He also loved his church, the Episcopal Cathedral of All Souls, having served on the Vestry, Endowment Fund, Property Committee, Usher and Docent team.

He was blessed for 66 years by his lovely wife, Marjory K. Martin, who preceded him in death in May, 2009. Surviving are Katherine M. Francis and husband, Ralph L. Francis, of Austin, TX, F. Jeffrey Martin and wife, Rose C. Martin, of Los Alamos, N.M., Frederick A. Martin and wife, Carol R. Martin, of Milford, Conn.; and three nieces and their husbands including Jean M. Loewer and husband, Peter Loewer, of Asheville. He also has five grandchildren, Robin Francis Serrano, Leslie Francis Thomas, Christina Martin Sherman, Ryan Martin and Neal Martin; as well as nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, April 4 at The Cathedral of All Souls, Biltmore Village, with a reception following at the church to meet the family. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the CarePartners Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813-1338.
