Spartanburg, SC - Gregory Byrd, age 66, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2014 surrounded by family at his home in Spartanburg, SC. A native of Pensacola, NC, he was the son of the late Ralph and Gladys Byrd of Cattail Creek, NC. After graduating from Pensacola Elementary, East Yancey High, and AB Tech, Greg moved to Spartanburg, SC to pursue his career, but was always deeply attached to his Yancey County roots.
Greg was a Senior Project Manager for Century Contractors where he worked for 28 years. He retired in April, 2013.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing, traveling, and dancing. He started shag dancing in 2000 where he formed a wide, loving circle of friends, one of which would become the love of his life and his wife, Debbie.
Greg was preceded in death by his son, Ardie Dale Byrd who passed away in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Debra Spicer Byrd of Cliffside, NC; son, Daryl Camby and his wife, Nikki, of Conway, SC, grandchildren, Kiersten and Andrew Camby; brother, Marris Byrd and his wife, Martha, of Hendersonville,NC; brother, Doyle Byrd and his wife, Denise, of Warwick, RI; sister, Sherrie Mayotte and her husband, Mark, of Ft. Collins, CO.
Visitation services will be held in both Spartanburg, SC and Laurel Branch Baptist Church in Pensacola, NC. The service in Spartanburg will be Saturday, January 18th, from 1-3 PM at the North Spartanburg Church of God at 2069 Chesnee Highway. The service at Laurel Branch will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Greg's wishes were that donations be made to the Widow's Heating Fund at Laurel Branch Baptist Church, 12 Pensacola School Rd, Burnsville, NC 28714.
