Asheville - Jean Margaret Bohmbach, 92, of Asheville, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Givens Estates. She was a long time resident of Woodbury Road in Beaverdam Valley. She was born on April 10, 1921 to the late Elmer J. Velander and Irene Adler Velander. She grew up in Vasa, Minnesota.
A graduate of Cannon Falls Teachers College, she was proud to have begun her career teaching in a one room school house in Goodhue County, Minnesota. It was there that she met her husband, Willis Bohmbach, who preceded her in death in 1993.
After living in California and Missouri, her husband's career with Gerber brought the family to Asheville in 1959. In Asheville she became the first teacher's aide in Buncombe County. She continued her career at Randolph and Woodfin schools. Upon her retirement, she became an active participant in the College for Seniors program at University of North Carolina, Asheville. She also spent a great deal of her time volunteering at the Asheville Art Museum. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and Central United Methodist.
She is survived by her loving children: her son, James W. Bohmbach of Nanjemoy, MD; her daughter, Lynda J. Bohmbach of Lenexa, KS; her grandchildren, Sarah Bohmbach Schmits of Lawrence, KS and Laura Bohmbach Schmits of Brooklyn, NY; her sister, Joanne Cutting of Los Gatos, CA; and her two beloved children by marriage: daughter-in-law, Susan Guthrie of Nanjemoy, MD and son-in-law, Murlin Merrill of Lenexa, KS.
She was a great lover of the arts, beauty, and learning. She was an unsurpassed cultivator of friendships.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, January 17, 2014 in the Chapel of Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801 with Reverend In-Yong Lee officiating. A private interment will take place at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Asheville Botanical Gardens, 151 WT Weaver Blvd., Asheville, NC 28804 and St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 223 Hillside Street, Asheville, NC 28801
