Black Mountain - Maie Phila Newland Minnick passed away July 11, 2012, at Highland Farms in Black Mountain. Maie was 88 years old.
Maie was born in KwangJu, Korea to missionary parents, LeRoy and Sarah Newland. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold E. Minnick; three brothers, L.T., Tom, and Reid; and two sisters, Louise Capen and Bolton Lunceford.
She is survived by her two sons, Harold E. "Ted" Minnick, Jr. (Joy) and Stephen T. "Steve" Minnick (Tricia); daughter, Molly N. Minnick; and sister, Keith McDaniel of Mississippi. Maie had five grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Maie was a speaker for Christian Women's Clubs across the United States and was also Past-President of the Protestant Women of the Church for Europe while her husband was stationed in Europe serving in the US Air Force. In 1970, Maie was selected as the USAF Military Airlift Command "Military Wife of the Year." Later that year they moved to Black Mountain when Hal retired from the Air Force after serving 30 years. Maie's interests included cooking, tennis, gardening, singing and teaching English through the Laubach Literacy Foundation whose slogan was "Each One Teach One."
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Highland Farms Appreciation Fund, 200 Tabernacle Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711, or one's favorite charity in Maie's honor.
